I started caring for this property along the Bruce Peninsula 10 years ago and which point I found it having not been cared for much 10 years before that. In time I came to understand the balance of working with nature and not competing with it, a garden approach established out of pragmatism since this is a seasonal part time property with it’s own set of challenges that include sheer size, unusual terrain, varying micro-climates and competing invasive species.
The wonderful result that has become of it is the improvement of a ecological environment that provides food, shelter and habitat for migrating birds and insects. By seeing plants in the field here and studying how they interact with one another the obvious answer that eventually took hold was to focus on native plants and organic practices.
